Singapore/Changi

We spotted from the 9th floor ‘secret room’ that somebody else mentioned before. Doesn’t take much to find it – exit the lifts on the 8th floor by the bar, head down the walkway past the swimming pool and you’ll see two doors to a building in front of you. This appears to be a function room.

If the doors are unlocked, then from that room there is a curved stairwell up to another function room which now technically makes it the 9th floor. If the function doors are locked, there is a fire escape stairway to your right which will lead straight up to the 9th floor room, if you first get over the fact that it takes you down first, before being able to go back up.

If worried about doing any of that, you can also spot from the 8th floor area where the swimmers wash and dry themselves off – sounds a bit pervy, but it’s not! Watch out for flying insects here though as after a cooling downpour, they quickly appeared……even with the height of the 8th & 9th floors, the humidity and reduced visibility meant we couldn’t make out the arrivals even when we really should have been able to. With that in mind, we made do with some downwinds and most departures.

It was a dry morning for us, but by the afternoon, we had periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms, which are times we could only hear stuff departing. Hotel staff on a couple of occasions came up to the 9th floor room where we camped all day, but didn’t bat an eyelid at our presence there. Mind you, despite moving some chairs for us to sit on, we were doing no harm and before we left, we returned the set-up to the condition that we found it in.

Some info about this hotel – Bearing in mind that breakfast was not part of the room rate offered to me, that it also was non-refundable on request to cancel and they did not in any way honour my in advance room requests at all or even offer to help with it the next day, I would choose the Crown Plaza next time – I have to say that I was torn over the two before I came out here but other spotter reports had swayed me. I think if they were landing and departing off runways 20R & 20C, this hotel would be better, but as they used runways 02L & 02C the whole I was here, I think the Crown Plaza might be better as it’s at that end of the airport.

The following log is from 07:00 to midnight, in country prefix, then airline, type and reg order. The weather was pretty terrible during our stay, so I only managed to grab a few poor photographs of some aircraft and some better ones of the hotel, to give you an idea of what the top floor offers you in terms of views – as already mentioned, do not rely on getting a room with a view here.
