Taipei/Taoyuan
Our flight was in the early morning, so we used the Airport Line (Commuter) to get from the hotel to Terminal 1 – the end stop on this line is Taipei Main Station. The stop for the hotel area we were in was called “Airport Hotel”. This train line takes you to Terminal 2 and then Terminal 1 – 7 minutes travel from hotel to Terminal 1. Plenty of views out once airside. We flew to Tokyo/Narita on Scoot Boeing 787-9 9V-OJH and this was a two and a half hours flight.

Easy non-digital entry into Japan after filling out a “Disembarkation Card For Foreigner” and separate “Customs Declaration” form. Once public side in Terminal 1, we headed up level 5 – from here, you can access the free Observation Deck, even with your luggage. No security check for access, but you do see them walking around checking that things aren’t left unattended. Handy holes in the fence for cameras to be poked through and an interesting mix of traffic here to shoot. This deck gave info that it was open from 07:00 to 21:00 (1st October to 31st March) and 06:30 to 21:00 (1st April to 30th September). Also may be closed during inclement weather – rain doesn’t seem to count thankfully. There is also a Observation Deck in Terminal 2, but as I was happy with results and movements visible from Terminal 1, never ventured over to the other one.
With regards to our chosen hotel, that was to be the Airport Rest House, which is a 10 minute walk from Terminal 1. Views were visible from the rooms we had asked for, but given the opening hours and views to be had from the Observation Deck, you don’t need to rely on room views to do well at Narita. Rooms with views South towards Terminal 1 were 602, 604, 606, 608, 610, 612, 614, 616, 618, 620, 622, 624 & 626 – 626 is by a end of corridor window. Floors 7 & 8 were the same layout. This hotel does also have a shuttle bus and they informed me of the following;
We would like to inform you about the free shuttle bus from Narita Airport Terminals.
After 15:00, it runs every 30 minutes (excluding 19:00).

With regards to my request for rooms with a view, they obliged and replied with the following “Thank you for your message. As you requested, the rooms, including room 622, will be next to each other. Single rooms will be on the opposite side. Thank you for your understanding.” – We booked Twin Rooms-Non Smoking but I lost my notes for which room numbers we ended up with. All around the 622 range though as per the message from the hotel above.

Some of us took an Uber around to the museum located on the Southern perimeter road of Narita airport. You can still see movements whilst at this museum by either standing outside or going up to the 6th floor observation deck. We missed the last museum bus back to the airport and with Uber drivers unwilling to come for our fare, we had an exciting time trying to catch a local bus back towards the airport. Fortunately we managed to get a local to help us and we were soon reunited with the gang.
