St Athan (South Wales Aviation Museum), Cardiff, Staverton & Kemble – Sunday 3rd December 2023 (Grant Robinson)

Hi all,

Knowing that December was going to be light on aircraft, a few friends from work decided to have a day out to see if they could get the Air Busan A321 that had arrived at St Athan recently. I was tempted by this and we struck lucky despite some pretty awful weather that day…..we all assembled at Chieveley and the headed West along the M4…..

It would have been rude to have come all this way and not visit the superb and ever growing South Wales Aviation Museum. There was a Christmas Market in the main display hangar and some of the exhibits had been moved outside to make way. I was last here in July 2021 but made the Victor nose XH670, both Fedorov ME7 Mechta G-CHPT and G-CHUO, the superb ex Indian AF Hawker Tempest HA580 and the ex-Sierra Leone Commando SL-01 which used to be at Dunsfold and I thought had left the country via Southampton Docks.

Two more aircraft have been added to the collection since my visit – these being Provost T.1 G-MOOS/XF690 now on-site & Varsity T.1 G-BEDV/WJ945 waiting to be moved from Newquay. Please support this fantastic collection if you find yourself anywhere near Cardiff! https://www.swam.online/

Our driver was very keen and decided to ‘pop up the road’ to Staverton despite the appalling weather. The place was locked down good and proper and there was not even the consolation of seeing the Australian Cirrus that has been living here this year and apparently can be seen through a hangar window from the public side. We think we were at the right hangar but we had no such luck sadly. One scrape here for me in SR20 G-KIND, seen previously as PH-AMI.

Last stop for the day was my old stomping ground Kemble. A lot of airliner scrapping has taken place since my last visit here. Just two scrapes for me in C5-TEY & G-LSAO but there was a fair bit of excitement being shown by our very slack driver.

9H-AZC, Boeing 747 4H6, Air Atlanta Europe/Saudi Arabian Airlines (29900)
C5-TEY, Boeing 737 476SF, Bluebird Nordic (24436)
F-GRHQ, Airbus A319 111, Air France (1404)
G-LSAO, Boeing 757 256, (29309)
LY-SPC, Airbus A320 231, GetJet (415)
N29105, Boeing 737NG 809/W, (China Airlines) (29105)
N29106, Boeing 737NG 809/W, (China Airlines) (29106)
TF-AMI, Boeing 747 412BDSF, Air Atlanta Icelandic/Magma Aviation (27066)
VP-BRM, Airbus A321 232, Red Wings Airlines (802)

That rounds off a very good day of chat out on the fairly long road trip. Cheers for driving CB.
