Northolt, Luton, Stansted, Stapleford, Chigwell, Biggin Hill, Gatwick, Farnborough & Heathrow – Saturday 6th May 2023 (Grant Robinson)

Hi all,

I’m in the very lucky position nowadays where I can actually and happily spend a day with friends who also happen to be work mates. Craig nominated himself as the tour leader and driver for the day and so a complete circuit of the M25 and London was achieved. Because we were aware that some of the visiting VIP stuff present for the King’s Coronation was leaving during that afternoon onwards, we opted for a clockwise tour.

First up was Northolt. I took some photos here and these can be seen at;

The main target for the day was Stansted. Nice to see that the authorities were not bothered about the hordes of spotters trooping the Ash Path and hugging the fence line. I think mostly, people got what they could and then moved on, which helps especially as the parking situation must have be a pain for the locals. Out of respect for the passing of the Queen, I didn’t go chasing down the stuff that arrived for her funeral day last year, and so today was about catching up with 6V-SEN which I missed back then. I also needed 5N-FGV, B-222K, G-GBNI, K7067, N500EU & UP-A2001, so a good haul was had. Good to chat Stewart Toone!

Because of timing, we decided to give North Weald a miss. As the weather was getting worse, we were not sure much would have been seen anyhow and so we stuck with our plan to go to Stapleford. If anyone can please provide identities of the two Squirrels and the two heli wrecks behind them, that would be very much appreciated. These were outside and to the right of Gazelle YU-HES when looking across from the Cafe/Tower. Steady drizzle had set in by now and the weather check Texan ZM340 was barely seen by just one of us, as it went by to the South of the airfield and into London.

Great to bump into Andrew Rowbotham & Mr Read. We missed Ian Grove who was probably, and sensibly, staying out of the rain.

After chatting to a few people at Stapleford, who led us to believe we would see the flypast from there, we decided against it and headed further South inside the M25 and towards Chigwell. Our decision was based on the fact that the visibility had reduced and the weather check Texan hadn’t been that easy to see from Stapleford. We knew that the flypast would probably come in from the Chelmsford/A12 direction towards Buckingham Palace and that puts Chigwell pretty close to that line between the two.

Chigwell is just outside the expanded ULEZ zone and is right by the M11, so very easy to access and get away, without having to pay anything. We were originally heading for Hainault Forest Country Park but finding too many trees put us off and we ended up at 51.610868, 0.085277. This was a high spot which gave us a great view across to the City and although it was a much reduced effort, we had a good view of what went past…..just Apache AH.2 ZM723 was good for me out of this lot. I’ve made no effort to list the Red Arrows as I have not seen them listed anywhere.

After the Dartford crossing, next up was Biggin Hill. The weather was even worse now and we struggled to make out what was on the Control Tower ramp, so bad was it.

The driver was still going and so Farnborough was next. Sadly we missed the Bulgarian Falcon 2000 LZ-OOI which had already departed, but most other stuff was still in. We had noticed on the flight trackers, that a lot of the stuff we had already seen at the other fields earlier in the day, was gone or going. A7-CGM and CN-MVI were good for here, so all was good.

Then it was back to Heathrow, where we had all met earlier. Thanks for the company Andy, John & Craig – was a blast despite the weather. Bonus frames for me at the Row were B-LRV and B-1297. A nice way to finish the day where 310 aircraft were logged and I ended up on a total of 38 frames and 23 scrapes.

  1. A very comprensive and exciting report. Congratulations to all involved.

  2. Can you confirm where the following were parked at Stansted: Aus B737, N500EU Glex, The Brazilian A319, The Hellenic AF G5, The canadian F900 and G-NEWG.
    Where was 40-MNE at Luton parked?
    We were at the fence at Stansted and all around Luton and did not notice any the above around the time you were there.

    Regards
    Campbell

    1. Hi Campbell. I don’t see what me confirming positions will do for you, to be honest. If you didn’t see them, you didn’t see them. However I can assure you that they were there and seen by us. Some of the ones at Stansted were seen from the road close to the Diamond hangar, so it might be that you didn’t try that one? I’ll give you a couple of examples though as you appear to be doubting the accuracy……G-NEWG was visible outside the Diamond hangar on the farside and was seen from the Ash path fence walk and N500EU was also in full view a bit nearer outside the Harrods hangar, again from the same fence walk. I’m also not sure how you managed to miss the Montenegro Learjet at Luton as it was definitely parked outside. I realise this is not much help to you, but you did ask the question. Cheers, Grant
