Inverness, Kinloss (Morayvia), Lossiemouth, Peterhead/Longside, Peterhead & Aberdeen/Dyce – Thursday 9th September 2021 (Mark Paulin)

Good evening,

Today was the day the luck ran out with the weather. We awoke to mist and rain with the mist getting progressively worse until we got back to Peterhead.

First stop of the day was the Culloden Battlefield just outside Inverness although not much could be seen with visibility about 50 metres!

The short drive to Inverness Dalcross was next. Noted on a quick stop 0845 – 0900 different than last night

Then we retraced out steps of yesterday. Next call was at the Morayvia Collection at Kinloss Barracks. The Car Park is totally accessible and there were guys working on aircraft so a wander around the Museum perimeter identified the 25 or so present. Those of interest to me:

From here we made the short drive across to Lossiemouth. 4 P8s were present but ZP801 had flown to Display at the Jersey Air Show with ZP805 now here.

Next stop was for morning coffee in a nice Cafe in Fochabers before a long coastal run to Peterhead. Sadly the visibility precluded seeing the coastline to any great extent.

Our next call was at Longside at 1400. This former RAF station looked to be deserted when we arrived but we disturbed a guy in the Flying Club who was waiting for someone. After a polite request and again armed with hanger keys we visited all but one of the hangers on the field. 15 were logged although nothing of interest to me.

A short distance away a Lightning is Preserved. It is Displayed inside a Factory Grounds and is behind the Security Gate. Luckily the guy in the Gate House has someone available who could authorise us a quick visit. This would mean any proposed visits would have to be during business hours Monday to Friday.

XR749 Lightning RAF.

From here it was back to Aberdeen and the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Noted 1445 – 2200
