Cebu/Mactan
Well, that was a wild night. Our hostel took a battering from the high winds and extreme rain, but apart from some water finding its way into the room, we were all fine. Lazy morning watching the regional ATRs and DHC-8s come and go, and this is why we came here – very little activity from these at Manila. We also took time to collate a joint log of all the military bits that we saw yesterday afternoon, and that was another reason for coming down to Cebu.
We also took the short walk from here to look at the abandoned Koren A330 that crashed here 3 years ago. We then entered the GA side of Cebu airport thanks to a pre-arranged visit – very friendly, wherever we stopped to pop our heads-in and ask the question. Around 120 logged during a productive but very hot and humid morning. Happy to swap entry details in exchange for info on how to get around the GA area at Manila……
Some info about this hostel – Suite 3 at the top level gives a view out from your window of any arriving & departing traffic – in fact I was able to get photos of the departures by opening the window. There is also a small rooftop terrace area which also affords the same views. Can’t really get photos from there though as there is a roof getting in the way, but does mean you can spot in the rain.
I would think you’d only need one day in Cebu if you wanted to get the military stuff, regional ATRs and Dash 8s and have a go at the GA area if that is your thing – I’m very glad that we came down here for just that one day – well rewarded in return. Our internal flight with Philippines Airline back to Manila was delayed by one hour but as we had built in a four hour transit to get from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 for our Cebu flight towards Jakarta.

If you sit on the right hand side of the shuttle transfer bus, when going from Terminal 2 around to Terminal 3, you will be able to see a load of stuff in the GA area once you hit the elevated section of road – have your camera ready on speed shooting and you should come away with a few more numbers.

Entry into Indonesia was straight forward as we had all completed the formalities in advance although some of us went one step further and completed and paid for e-Visa rather than do it on arrival. My passport didn’t read at the e-gate, but there was an Immigration officer nearby who manually checked by details. Some of the chaps needed the Visa On Arrival (VOA) which can be paid for by card. This added a little bit of time, but we were all through fairly quickly whichever way – VOA signs are before you get to the immigration gates. As we arrived at Terminal 3 at Jakarta/Soekarno Hatta, we needed to get on the Skytrain to Terminal 2 to get to the Jakarta Airport Hotel, which is part of that terminal.
