Fairford – Friday 19th July 2019 (Gill Robinson)

Hi all,

In the spirit of sorting out old photographs and logging, whilst providing a bit of escapism during these difficult times, here follows a log from the last Royal International Air Tattoo held at Fairford in 2019. This is a bit of an unusual one, as I didn’t actually attend but my wife did. The text and pictures that follow are all hers and this will be her first log report ever 🙂

The first part of the log was taken from her pictures and the official checklist. The second part is what else should have been there as indicated by the checklist.

Over to Gill……..

On Friday 19th July I braved the weather and attended RIAT. Alone. My absent Wingman had taken himself off to the USA and that day was apparently in Tucson. While he was swanning around Pima, having a bus tour of AMARC and skulking around the scrapyards in 100deg heat seeing thousands of aircraft, I was having a swim around the static at Fairford. I hesitate to say he was on holiday as he insists these tours are ‘ordeals’. Poor lamb.

I never usually attend these things by myself so I felt like my heroine Amelia Earhart, a pioneering woman in pursuit of success in a male dominated hobby. Yes, I was plane spotting at an airshow. Solo.

The rain and thunder were relentless so some of my attempts at taking professional looking pictures could be confused with photos of a tsunami. However, you will hopefully see some interesting aircraft among them.

My eye was immediately drawn to two Ukranian Su-27’s – a great start which was made even more special because I later found out that my Wingman needed one of them! Ha!

As always there was a great static line up although disappointingly about a third of the display wasn’t accessible to the public. The ticket was the same price as the Saturday and Sunday ones so I did feel somewhat cheated.

As Grant will tell you, I’m not given to ranting (!) but I did make my feelings known on the feedback for the show. Sadly the air display was curtailed owing to the weather so I was crestfallen. RIAT is the highlight of my year but it’s fair to say today wasn’t my finest hour.

However, I hope you get as much pleasure as I did when I found out that of the 2 USAF KC-10As that he needs (there are 60 of them?), I ticked one of his off my list! I said it was God’s punishment to which he responded that I’m God’s punishment! The cheek of it! The Wingman is now grounded for the foreseeable future….. 🙂
